Telecine guidelines for print dailies

In order to expedite dailies in our telecine facility, we ask that the guidelines listed below be followed:

Before transfers start:
We will need tone material from Production and/or from the sound transfer facility so we can make a set-up loop for the Mag machine. If we do not get a tone roll from the client, we will use an industry standard loop to balance the machines. An example of the Electronic Code Book output file and print out from Editorial (if one is going to be used) is needed to set-up import templates. See more information on Electronic Code Book listed below. Both picture and sound rolls need to have 20 to 25 feet of leader BEFORE the Sync/Start (punch) mark. This allows telecine and mag to be threaded up and to have cueing space. Any changes to specs or any special instructions should come to the office via Fax or as a memo with the film. To avoid confusion, we will need an NT Audio Spec Sheet filled out. If the show has its own specific Spec Sheet, we will need that too.

Daily roll assembly:
Run up (also known as pre-roll) is needed so that the various readers (audio time code, KeyKode...) will have time to re-jam after each take/splice. There should be between two (2) and ten (10) feet between a takes splice and the "Logged" punch.

Database file information:
If a client is going to supply NT Audio with Electronic code book information for logging, it must be in the following format. 1. A Tab Delimited Return Seperated file format (Tab Delimited option in FileMaker). 2. On a MAC or PC formatted floppy or a MAC or PC formatted ZIP disk. 3. One (1) file for each daily roll. 4. One (1) file that represents the order that the rolls will be transferred.
We request a telecine transfer log that provides the roll order for transfers. If the client doesn't have this type of log, we can supply it.

Window burn-ins and mattes:
For the most part, NT Audio recommends window burn-ins for video tape time code, production audio time code, acmade (ink) numbers. KeyKode numbers are an option. There MUST be Framing Leader at the head of each daily roll. The Framing Leader should be the same framing chart for each daily roll.

Print dailies and the media station:
The client will supply at least five (5) JAZ 2GB Macintosh formatted cartridges. All cartridges need to be at NT Audio before the first day of transfers, allowing time to test and verify that the JAZ cartridges are good. NT Audio also recommends that print dailies be transferred as one Master Clip per daily roll, non stop from Head to Tail. The Daily Roll can be sub-clipped for each event in that daily roll after transfer.
